Keeping the number of steps for each job below ten is helpful. If a specific job has more than ten steps, consider separating it into two jobs.
Once you’ve broken down a job into individual steps, identify potential hazards. Getting feedback from experienced workers is helpful because they can contribute from experience. Since the workers might also encounter these potential hazards regularly, they might have ideas or strategies for mitigating risk.
You’ll want to assess each hazard’s risk. A risk assessment will help you identify the probability of each hazard and the severity of possible accident injuries. Understanding which hazards have the highest probability and risk will help you devise preventative measures to mitigate them.
Most worksites try to reduce exposure to a hazard. However, this should be a last resort because it’s the least effective hazard mitigation method. Instead, focus on revamping work procedures by changing task sequences or adding steps to minimize safety risks.
